ATLANTA – (June 21, 2011) Just in time for summer, Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, a Vantage Oncology company, will provide free of charge prostate specific antigen (PSA) cancer screenings at their locations throughout Metro Atlanta. A prostate screening PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a simple blood test which will not define a man’s prostate cancer status, but provides the basis for men to start the right conversations with their doctor. When prostate cancer is detected early, it is a very curable disease. Free-of-charge PSA screenings will be available in Gwinnett County, Newton County and Rockdale County in July and August.

Atlanta (June 14, 2011) – Behind skin cancer, breast cancer represents the most common cancer in women in the U.S., and prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Roughly one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime and one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, a division of Vantage Oncology, is reminding you to encourage your parents, both mothers and fathers, to be aware and know their options.
Mother’s Day reminded us how much our loved ones mean to us, which makes this the perfect time to become better educated on breast cancer and its treatment options. Every type of breast cancer is different, therefore making it critical to identify the best treatment for your type of cancer.
“Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women right behind lung cancer,” said Dr. Tracy McElveen of Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia – Gwinnett County. “Talk to your physician and consider all treatment options so you can pick the one that will work best for you.”
Last year in Georgia, 6,130 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed, and an estimated 1,100 women died from breast cancer. One treatment offered by Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia is Partial Breast Irradiation (PBI), a technique that appeals to many people for its shorter treatment time (one week versus six or seven weeks for whole breast radiation). This results in a more convenient radiation treatment plan for people who would otherwise have to travel far distances to get to a cancer treatment center. Treatment depends on the type of cancer and your condition, therefore it is essential to speak with your physician and learn about the best option for you.
As Father’s Day approaches in June, our fathers must also take serious action in becoming educated, aware and getting themselves screened and treated for prostate cancer. More than 2 million men in the U.S. have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and are still alive today. Prostate cancer is 100 percent treatable when caught early.
Men must take an active role in preventing such a deadly disease. This Father’s Day, Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia encourages you to push your fathers, brothers, uncles, sons and loved ones to take the pledge to get screened or start the dialogue with their physician. With five locations in Georgia, Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia is easily accessible and close to home for screenings and treatment. For more information or to make the pledge, visit www.georgiaprostatecancerpledge.com.
Atlanta (June 14, 2011) – Strap on your boots and grab your saddles as the Down N’ Dirty Rodeo brands its inaugural mark on Atlanta July 9 -10 at the Jim Miller Park in Marietta, Ga. Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, a Vantage company, Xfinity and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. are proud to partner with the Down N’ Dirty “know your numbers” Rodeo Tour in support of educating men and their families about prostate cancer. Proceeds from the two-day rodeo will benefit the Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition and the Comprehensive Men’s Health Initiative.
“We are thrilled to be working with the Down N’ Dirty Rodeo as they promote prostate cancer awareness in Georgia,” said Shelly Glenn, of Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia. “This rodeo will bring together community members and spread the important message that education and awareness is a key part of prevention.”
The Down N’ Dirty “know your numbers” Rodeo Tour, coordinated by Rodeo Manager Stanley Knowles, president and CEO as well as rodeo manager, is committed to increasing awareness in the community about prostate cancer, and expects 4000-5000 spectators at the inaugural event.
“Prostate cancer doesn’t care how much money you have or the color of your skin,” said Knowles. “It is destroying families, so men – put your pride on the shelf and go get checked.”
The Centers for Disease Control reports prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, and one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.
Before, during and after the rodeo, attendees can visit the health fair where important information about prostate cancer prevention, screening and quality men’s health will be available.
This two-day rodeo event, Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10 will feature calf roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping, bareback riding and the most dangerous sport in the world: bull riding. For more information, or to purchase tickets, please visit www.KnowYourNumbersRodeo.com

She specializes in women’s malignancies and was one of the pioneers in partial breast irradiation and one of few physicians endorsed by MammoSite® Targeted Radiation Therapy.
“I am very excited to continue my work as a radiation oncologist and look forward to enhancing and expanding the Integrative Oncology Program for Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia. Establishing supportive cancer programs such as nutritional counseling, massage therapy, acupuncture, weight management, smoking cessation, mind/body techniques, education and exercise will be the key areas of focus,” said Dr. McElveen.
While undergoing treatment, there can be drastic changes in one’s body and lifestyle. Our Integrative Oncology program utilizes proven techniques to help ease the stress of cancer treatment while promoting health and healing. Nutritional counseling is a key part of the wellness program, as it is known to help patients maintain adequate energy levels during treatment and combat side effects from therapy. Exercise is also important as it has the ability to reduce stress, increase stamina, establish balance and improve sleep. Massage is proven to relieve tension and decrease pain while the Mind-Body program encourages patients to explore ways to cope with the psychological stress of cancer treatment. Acupuncture is a safe, painless and effective way to promote the body’s natural healing. Smoking cessation will also be an element of the Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia Integrative Oncology Program, including the four-week smoking cessation class written by the American Cancer Society. Under Dr McElveen’s guidance and direction we intend to provide all these services and more to patients treated at our centers.
Dr. McElveen earned a Bachelor of Science from Stetson University where she graduated summa cum laude, and went on to receive her Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Fla.
