Understanding prostate cancer.

After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, most men realize they know very little about this disease. To make a good decision about how you want to be treated and cured, it’s crucial to know everything you can. In this section, we’ll give you an overview of the disease, including how it’s detected, diagnosed and measured. And you’ll find out how we ultimately consider you to be cured.

The numbers.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in men. In fact, one in six men will get prostate cancer in his lifetime. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 220,000 men will be diagnosed with it in 2008. While these statistics are unfortunate, it’s important to remember the power of early detection. Prostate cancer can be a slow moving disease, and if caught early enough, it is curable with proper treatment.

Who’s at risk?

While we don’t know the exact cause of prostate cancer, we do know that environment and diet can play a role. Men over the age of 50 from Western industrialized nations have a much higher incidence of prostate cancer than men from Asia. Additionally, African-American men are more likely to get an aggressive form of prostate cancer than Caucasian men. And any man whose father, grandfather, uncle or brother has had prostate cancer is also at a greater risk of getting this disease.
